Why Do a Beauty Detox?

No matter where you are in life, we all are need of a good detox here and there. Whether you're just starting out your journey to being a natural babe or have been living a natural lifestyle for years now, it's always good to stop and reset once in a while. That's what this Detox Beauty Challenge does; gets you back on the right track. The bonus is you feel great and your skin glows.

For Babes New to a Beauty Detox

I know what it's like to be on the other side of a beauty detox. When I was young, I led a very pro-inflammatory lifestyle; fast food, next to no exercise, no veggies, lots of drinking and post-bar Sourdough Jacks (terrible, but let's face it, delicious at the time), etc. You get the idea.

My body gave out on me when I was nineteen and I was bedridden for about a month. The doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with me, except that my LDL cholesterol level (what is considered the "bad" cholesterol, too much is not good) was at 270. Now read below what levels should be according to Medical News Today, yikes:

"LDL cholesterol levels should be less than 100 mg/dL. Levels of 100 to 129 mg/dL are acceptable for people with no health issues but may be of more concern for those with heart disease or heart disease risk factors. A reading of 130 to 159 mg/dL is borderline high and 160 to 189 mg/dL is high."

Yep, mine was at 270! Not good.

Every Babe Needs a Good Detox

At that time I was extremely unhealthy, but I didn't realize it until I got sick. I hadn't gained any weight. I was a pretty skinny so I thought, "I'm fine, why change anything?" And I was a teenager so I was usually able to bounce back from getting sick here and there. But when I got sick at 19 I felt like I got hit by a truck and I couldn't seem to get better.

It took me a long time to recover from that month of having literally no energy. It messed with my sleep and I began to get insomnia, gave me so much anxiety that my doctor wanted to put me on prescription meds (which I declined) and I had to drop out of school because I couldn't even get out of bed to attend class. My body was so out of whack it just gave up on me.

It was a wake up call to say the least.

You might be wondering what bad cholesterol and getting sick has to do with the Detox Beauty Challenge.


This experience is what led me down this path of not only being a natural babe, but also cleaning up my lifestyle in general. Because it all goes hand in, beauty and well-being.

It took me a long time to learn these lessons. It wasn't an overnight process. Although I did clean up my lifestyle quite at the age of 19, it wasn't until I was 27 that I really dug into what it meant to be healthy and to really "detox".

In my 20s I certainly was eating better 80% of the time than I had been (not exactly what I consider healthy now, but much better than the constant dose of soda and junk food I consumed as a teenager), but I had a new temptation.

Nightlife. And with being young and wanting to have fun (a lot of fun) came lots of drinking and 2am stops through the drive thru for my favorite, Sourdough Jacks. Good lord, I ate a lot of those.

Eventually, the party ended, thank goodness. I found myself yearning for more meaning in my life. I started to question things. I wanted to feel better and get off the party train. So around the age of 27, I did just that.

First off, I began to question what was in my beauty products and instead of using store bought products, I began washing my face with honey (learn more about my journey to a  raw honey face wash). 

My journey to natural beauty also lead me on a journey to eating much, much healthier than I had been. Before that I had been eating pretty average. Not a lot of fresh veggies and fruits, but a lot of meat and processed foods. 

When I cut the two of those out (I still ate meat about once a week at the time) and began eating  tons of veggies and whole grains, I lost about 10 pounds within a month. It was mind-blowing. Mind you, I wasn't even trying to lose any weight. It just sort of happened, which to me, means my body was holding on to a lot of toxins it needed to shed.

The best part was I felt so much better. Not just physically, but also mentally and emotionally. It's amazing what a bit of detox can do for your peace of mind and relieving stress.

And when you relieve stress, you sleep better, you feel better and you look better. 

A win win.

Why I Still Do Mini Beauty Detoxes to Keep Me Healthy

Now ten years later at age 37, I still eat mostly a ton of fruits, veggies and grains, with a little bit of meat here and there. I make all of my own skincare products (my skincare routine are our recipes that are available in our Babe-Face DIY Skincare Starter Kit). 

Leading a fairly healthy lifestyle has become second nature to me by now.

Not to say I don't have any unhealthy habits that need to be reeled in a bit.

Such as spending too much time on my computer or phone for work. And not being as consistent with working out as I should be. And sometimes letting stress get to me

That's why I think it's essential to a detox here and there for the sake of our health and well-being. The cherry on top being that it promotes our beauty as well.

And when I say detox, I don't mean fasting for a week or completely changing everything about your lifestyle all at once. It can as simple as taking a relaxing bath or incorporating a green juice into your daily or weekly routine. Anything that you make you feel blissed out, healthy and rejuvenated.

Like I said, you don't have to go all out to detox. In fact, it's almost better to do one small step at a time. That way, you can easily incorporate baby steps into your daily lifestyle.

How The Detox Beauty Challenge Gives You Glowing Skin

This Detox Beauty Challenge is an introduction on how to add detoxing rituals to your lifestyle. For the challenge, we're sticking to one recipe a day, but afterwards, feel free to incorporate these rituals into your daily or weekly routine.

Juicing - We all know getting more greens and veggies into our diet is essential for good health. And most of us know that's easier said than done, right? A green juice is a great way to start your day off on the right track. For this challenge, we're keeping things super simple and starting the entire challenge off with one green juice. However, you might feel so great after drinking our Skin Clearing Detox Juice that you'll want to do it every day. Go for it.

Exfoliating - I love a good body scrub. Not only does it help remove dry flakey skin, but it really gets your circulation going which is great for your skin. More blood flow means supplying more oxygen to your skin and promoting cell growth. Plus it feels amazing. Use our Blush Detox Salt Scrub daily or every other day.

De-stressing - A major, major part of good health is reducing stress. In fact, I would say that it's just as important as eating well and exercise. The thing we must remember is that a healthy diet and working out does wonders for de-stressing your bod in the first place. But since we live in such a fast paced society, it's also essential to take some time to slow down whether that be meditation, a leisurely walk outside or one of our favorite things to do here at Salt & Ritual, take a bath. Foods to Eliminate During the Challenge

You can if you want, take this challenge a step further than just doing the recipes. You can eliminate certain pro-inflammatory foods like:

  • Processed foods
  • Refined Sugar
  • Refined Flour
  • Soda 
  • Alcohol

Don't worry, this is not required for this challenge. However, if you're feeling inspired, you could try removing one of these items each week until they're not a part of your regular diet.

As a general rule of thumb in my life, I don't eat any of these on a regular basis, especially not refined sugar, flour or soda. In fact, I rarely if ever have soda anymore.

I may once in a while have a sweet treat or mac and cheese on lazy Sunday, but none of these items are part of my regular diet.

Note: I do eat bread, but it's a sprouted whole grain bread from Trader Joe's. It doesn't make me feel bloated at all. I also eat brown rice pasta about once a week. I would say those are two processed foods that are in my regular diet.

We're kicking the Detox Beauty Challenge off with a green juice and ending it with a delicious honey milk. Why? Ginger - A major ingredient in our Skin Clearing Detox Juice, ginger improves digestion and helps flush out your system, plus is anti-inflammatory, leaving your bod slim and your skin clear.

Cucumber - Get hydrated and flush out your system with cucumber, which is 96% water. High in antioxidants like flavonoids and tannins, cucumbers not only fight cancer, but also slow aging. Also a diuretic, they flush out toxins and waste from our liver and gut. 

Parsley - One of the main ingredients in our Detox Juice, parsley is ideal for detoxing the body. Just like cucumber, this herb has a high source of antioxidants such as beta carotene, alpha carotene and luteolin, good fighting disease and reducing inflammation. Parsely is also a diuretic, improves digestions plus kills bacteria and fungus.

Dandelion Greens Extremely high in vitamin K and A, fresh and raw dandelion greens are great for protecting your skin and vision. Because of its high fiber content, these greens push waste and toxins out of your system, keeping your bod clean. Plus they're stacked with antioxidants, calcium and minerals.

Fennel - High in vitamin C, fennel is a great ingredient for anti-aging, helping to create collagen within the body. Plus it's high in calcium and antioxidants, making it ideal for bone health and fighting disease and cancer.

Celery is amazing for digestive health thanks to its compound, NBP, which helps it to act as a diuretic and flush your bod of toxins and waste. Add to that its anti-microbial properties to fight infections and lowers inflammation thanks to its high content of antioxidants.

Apples don't just sweeten up green juices, they also provide a ton of fiber and are a natural diuretic, helping with gut health and removing waste and toxins. They also reduce inflammation because of their high antioxidant properties.

Manuka Honey - We like to call Manuka, super honey, because of its super healing powers. It can aid digestion, fight infection and help with sleep because of it releases glycogen. Not only is Manuka honey good for you to take internally, it helps babes fight acne and heals Eczema. We suggest using +16 rated Manuka to get the most therapeutic benefits. Babes that have bee allergies are recommended to talk with their doctor before using.

Almonds - Good source of healthy fats. Contains alkali materials, which supports the immune system. Almonds are also known to lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, as well as reduce blood pressure.

Turmeric Root - This root is packed with antioxidants including curcumin, which has a ton of benefits including protecting the liver, killing fungus, destroying cancer cells and lowering cholesterol. Turmeric is also known as a potent anti-inflammatory that can help with reducing pain and arthritis and fighting cancer. Although Turmeric is a well known health food, there are also claims that it has some side effects and should not be taken with certain drugs. Most info seems to conclude that Turmeric used as a spice shouldn't be an issue and most side effects come from heavy doses, but as always do your own research and talk to your doctor before using if your are pregnant or on medication.

Cinnamon - Not only does cinnamon taste delicious, but it's rated as one of the top super foods when it comes to antioxidant density. Along with many of these other ingredients, cinnamon is anti-inflammatory, making it an ideal ingredient to use to promote anti-aging. It's also known to fight bacteria and viruses. Plus it gives you good breath naturally.

Cardamon - Cinnamon isn't the only spice that can fight bad breath. Cardamon is well known for fighting the oral bacteria that can cause bad breath. But that's not all, babe. Cardamon also aides digestion and has been commonly used in ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.
